February’s Climate News with Naru

The Good:

  • Big news from the EU! A new deal has been struck setting targets to cut food and textile waste, making producers take responsibility for waste and recycling. By 2030, food waste must drop by 30% per capita!

  • New Zealand's Right to Repair Bill has passed its first reading, aiming to ensure access to repairs and spare parts. Green MP Marama Davidson says it reduces waste and costs. The bill would also protect warranties when using unauthorised repairers.

  • Auckland Zoo’s elephant Burma met Perth Zoo’s Permai at Monarto Safari Park, her first companion since relocating. Keepers from Auckland Zoo have stayed to support her

The Bad:

  • Hundreds of school lunches are going to waste as students reject repetitive, low-quality meals under the revamped School Lunch programme. The government continues to defend the cost-saving programme despite widespread food waste and negative feedback.

  • Fires rage through Waipoua in Northland, coming too close for comfort to Tāne Mahuta,  our largest known kauri tree and causing residents to evacuate. Huge thanks to the fire fighters for their mahi in containing the blaze.

  • Severe flooding in North Queensland, driven by intense rainfall, has caused evacuations, power cuts, and school closures. Officials are calling it a “once-in-a-century” flood, highlighting the increasing intensity of climate-driven events.

What you can do:

  • To help the Right to Repair Amendment Bill pass, raise awareness by sharing information on social media, writing submissions on the bill when they open, and joining community discussions. Contact your local MP to express support, sign petitions, and engage with advocacy groups like the Right to Repair Aotearoa Coalition.

  • To cut school lunch waste, we can push for more meal variety, better portioning, and proper dietary options. Reach out to your MP and express your concerns with these lunches.

  • Don't forget to rescue some kai from the app this week—climate action can be delicious too!
